“I can see him online, posting stories or liking things, while my message sits there unanswered for hours. I know he doesn’t have to reply instantly, but when it keeps happening, I start wondering whether he’s deliberately avoiding me or just isn’t that interested.”

Being Online Doesn’t Automatically Mean He’s Ready to Talk to You
This is the part that’s easy to forget when you’re staring at the little “active” indicator.
Someone can have enough energy to scroll through Instagram, watch videos or answer something effortless without wanting to start an actual conversation. Replying to a personal message can require more attention, especially if the conversation needs thought or emotional effort.
So don’t treat his online status as proof that he’s deliberately ignoring you. It tells you he’s using his phone. It doesn’t tell you what he’s doing, thinking or prioritizing.
But Look at the Pattern, Not One Delayed Reply
One slow reply doesn’t tell you much. A pattern can.
Does he eventually respond properly and continue the conversation? Does he ask questions, remember things you’ve told him and make an effort to see you? Does he communicate consistently even if he’s not a fast texter?

Or are you constantly waiting, while he gives you short replies, disappears for long periods and only comes back when it suits him?
That’s much more useful information than whether he was online at 09:15. People have very different texting habits, and delayed replies don’t automatically mean someone isn’t interested.
Don’t Start Playing the Same Game
It can be tempting to think, Fine. I’ll take hours to reply too. But deliberately delaying your replies to make him wonder where you are usually creates another problem instead of solving the first one.
Reply when you genuinely want to reply. Don’t keep your phone beside you waiting for his message, and don’t suddenly become unavailable just to prove that you have a life.
You don’t need to win the texting game.
If It Bothers You, Talk About the Actual Problem

If you’re already dating or regularly talking, you can tell him that inconsistent communication is leaving you confused. You don’t need to accuse him of ignoring you because you saw him online. Try talking about the pattern instead.
You might say that you don’t expect instant replies, but you’d like communication to feel more consistent. His response can tell you something important.
If he regularly shuts down when you try to talk about serious things, the problem may be much bigger than his response time. A healthy connection doesn’t require constant texting, but it should leave room for both people to feel heard and considered.
Ask Yourself What You Actually Need
You may never know why he was online and didn’t reply.
Maybe he was distracted. Maybe he wasn’t in the mood to talk. Maybe texting simply isn’t important to him. Or perhaps his interest isn’t as strong as yours.
Instead of trying to solve that mystery through his activity status, look at whether the relationship is giving you the communication you need.
And if he texts you every day but never asks you out, that’s a different pattern worth paying attention to as well.
You don’t need to decode every online status or count every hour between messages. Look at his consistency, his effort and how you feel in the relationship. The right person won’t necessarily reply instantly but you shouldn’t have to constantly wonder where you stand.
