We’ve been together for years, and whenever I try to talk about marriage, he somehow manages to avoid the conversation. He changes the subject, says we’ll talk about it later, gets irritated, or tells me I’m putting too much pressure on him. I’ve tried bringing it up gently, but I’m still left wondering what our relationship is actually leading toward. How am I supposed to handle this?

It is difficult to feel secure in a relationship when one of the biggest questions about your future keeps getting pushed aside.
You may not even be asking for a wedding date. You may simply want to know whether marriage is something he genuinely sees happening with you.
And after years together, repeatedly getting no clear answer can become its own source of anxiety.
Stop Trying to Have the Same Conversation the Same Way
If you’ve already asked, “Do you want to marry me?” several times and always get the same vague answer, repeating the question probably won’t give you a different result.
Change the conversation. Instead of asking when he will marry you, ask what he thinks about marriage itself.
Does he even want to get married someday? Does he see himself marrying you? What makes him uncomfortable about the idea? Is there something he believes needs to happen first?
You aren’t trying to corner him into proposing. You’re trying to understand what he’s actually thinking.
Ask Him What “Not Ready” Actually Means

“I’m not ready” sounds like an answer, but it can mean almost anything.
Not ready financially or not ready emotionally?
Not ready because of family circumstances or not ready because he doesn’t want marriage?
Or Not ready because he isn’t sure about the relationship?
Ask him to be specific. You can say, “I’m not asking you to get married tomorrow. I need to understand what you’re waiting for and whether marriage is something you genuinely want in the future.”
A specific concern can be discussed. A permanently vague answer leaves you with nothing to work with.
Give Him Space to Answer, But Don’t Let the Topic Disappear
There is nothing wrong with giving someone time to think. But there is a difference between giving someone space and allowing an important conversation to disappear indefinitely.
If he says he isn’t ready to discuss it right now, you can agree to revisit it later.
The important part is whether he actually comes back to it.
If every conversation ends with “later,” and later never comes, you need to pay attention to that pattern rather than waiting for the perfect moment.
Decide What You Actually Need From the Relationship

Before focusing entirely on what he wants, get clear about what you want.
Do you definitely want marriage? Would you be happy continuing the relationship without a marriage timeline?
Would you be comfortable waiting another year or two? Is marriage important enough to you that staying indefinitely without clarity would eventually make you unhappy?
There is no universal deadline for marriage. But there is also no reason to pretend something isn’t important to you just because your partner doesn’t want to discuss it. Knowing your own boundary makes the conversation much clearer.
What If He Still Refuses to Talk?
At some point, you may need to stop trying to find the perfect way to ask.
You can calmly tell him that marriage is an important part of how you think about your future and that you need an honest conversation about whether you both want the same thing. Then watch what he does.
Not just what he promises. Not just whether he says “of course I love you.”
Does he actually engage with the conversation? Does he explain his concerns? Does he suggest a realistic way forward? Does he come back to the topic without you having to chase him?
You cannot force someone to be ready for marriage. But you can decide how long you’re willing to live with uncertainty. A relationship doesn’t need a wedding date to be real but it does need two people who are willing to be honest about where they see it going.
