“My boyfriend still follows his ex on social media, and I’ve noticed he occasionally likes her posts. I know following an ex doesn’t automatically mean anything, but I still feel uncomfortable when I see it. I don’t want to come across as jealous or controlling. Should I bring it up?”

It’s easy to tell yourself you’re being ridiculous when the thing bothering you is just an Instagram follow or a like. But sometimes it’s not really about the button he pressed.
It’s about what that interaction makes you wonder.
Does he still think about her? Are they still talking? Why does he want to keep up with her life? And most importantly, should you say something or just let it go?
Don’t Decide What It Means Before You Know
Following an ex isn’t automatically a sign that someone still has feelings for them.
Some people remain connected because they ended things peacefully. They may have mutual friends, shared history, or simply never felt a reason to unfollow each other. In some cases, the ex is simply part of an old social circle.
So, don’t turn one Instagram activity into a whole story about your relationship.
Look at the bigger picture. How does your boyfriend treat you? Is he open about his past? Is there actual contact with his ex beyond occasionally seeing each other’s posts?
Those details matter more than the follow itself.
Ask Yourself What Actually Bothers You
Before bringing it up, figure out what you’re uncomfortable with.
Is it simply that he still follows her or is it that he likes, comments on her posts, messages her, hides their interactions, or seems unusually interested in what she’s doing?
Those are very different situations.
You may also discover that the biggest problem is comparison. Seeing his ex online can make you start looking at her appearance, relationship, lifestyle, and old pictures and wondering whether you’re somehow being compared with her.
That rabbit hole rarely makes you feel better.
Social media gives you tiny pieces of information without the context behind them, which can make jealousy and suspicion grow.
Yes, You Can Bring It Up

If something has been bothering you repeatedly, it’s reasonable to talk about it.
The goal should be understanding, not catching him doing something wrong.
Find out what their relationship is now. Maybe they’re genuinely just old acquaintances. Maybe they occasionally interact because they’re part of the same social circle. Maybe he hasn’t thought twice about the likes.
You won’t know until you ask. And you may feel much less anxious once you have an actual answer instead of trying to interpret his Instagram activity yourself.
Pay Attention to His Response
This is probably more important than whether he follows her. You can bring up something that makes you uncomfortable without demanding that your partner immediately change everything.
What matters is whether he can have a normal conversation about it.
Does he explain the situation openly? Does he care that it’s bothering you? Can the two of you talk about what feels appropriate in your relationship?
There are couples who are perfectly comfortable with partners remaining friends with exes. There are also couples who have different boundaries around social media and past relationships.
Neither relationship automatically has to follow the same rules.
The important thing is that both people understand the boundaries they’re agreeing to.
Don’t Turn Into a Detective

This is where you need to be careful.
Once you start checking who your boyfriend follows, when he liked something, whether his ex viewed his story, and what she posted yesterday, it can become a never-ending investigation. And the more you look, the more things you can find to worry about.
If you trust him, give that trust room to exist.
If you genuinely don’t trust him because of his behaviour, then the problem is bigger than one Instagram like.
You Don’t Have to Be “The Cool Girlfriend”
You don’t win relationship points for pretending nothing bothers you. You can be confident and still have boundaries.
So yes, bring it up if it’s genuinely bothering you.
Just don’t make the conversation about whether his ex is prettier, whether he still has feelings for her, or whether he should erase every trace of his past.
Make it about understanding what’s happening between them and figuring out what feels respectful within your relationship.
And then look at his behaviour not just his Instagram.
You don’t need to compete with someone from his past. You just need to know whether the relationship you’re in feels secure, respectful, and honest now.
